The Korean Warrior Elite

The sulsa were a warrior elite who can find their equivalents among the Japanese ninja. This secret sect, who stemmed from the hwa-rang-do, were masters of espionage and silent killing techniques. Their training was so extreme that other warriors often classed them as a type of one-man army. Students eligible to learn this art were picked from the cream of the Hwa-rang-do ranks.

Sulsa was not a martial art but the name of an elite group of warriors who used martial arts with ruthless efficiency. A latter day Special Forces Navy Seal or SAS commando. They excelled in many forms of Korean martial arts: Hwa-Rang-Do, Tae-Soo-Do, Tae-Kwon-Do,Yu-Do, Hap-Ki-Do, Gum-Do, Tae-Kyon.

The sulsa's training guided him through martial art skills that could be geared to meet every encounter. They could walk on water using special boat-like shoes, scale sheer castle walls with ease and, with carefully adapted kites, they were able to soar over enemy positions taking count of their fortifications. Unlike the ninja, the sulsa were not picked and trained from birth.

**The boat shoes can be attributed to the technique termed Jham Soo Sul. Along with other attributes this technique allows the Sulsa to survive under water for long periods and also to travel on water.Their equipment included boots containing large air balloons or air sacks and wooden buckets which allowed them to walk on or in the water. As with Ninja most Sulsa special techniques are shrouded in secrecy and also myth. For this reason there is not a lot of documented evidence concerning the boat shoes. Ninja also used their own form of boat shoes or water crossing device: The Mizugumo, Japanese for water spider.

The principles of sulsa training have been adapted by many of the world's armed services, most notably the US Rangers, who were taught these skills by the late Mike Echanis. These skils included: The study of infiltration and exfiltration techniques. Techniques in traveling swiftly, climbing and stealth. Emphisis is placed on sneaking behind enemy lines to collect information and relay it back. Camouflage is also an important part of what Echanis taught to the Rangers. Many aspects of shin gong mental power,  the development of patience, the technique of putting a person to sleep and sa sang bop study of human types.

Mike Echanis included the study of Bo-bop - stalking and stealth taught for sentry stalking - removal and fast silent movement. The utilization of dan jun ho heup bop the study of breathing techniques to assist in body relaxation. Echanis had been a student of Hwa-rang-do under the grandmaster Joo Bang Lee. Lee taught him much of this ancient knowledge and Echanis expanded it with some of his own ideas.**

Modern psychology became involved, and Echanis trained service personnel in thought-control and meditation. Since then, the martial arts of the sulsa have been taught to non-military people and interest in this fighting method is growing among modern martial arts enthusiasts.
